Massachusetts Judge Halts Kalshi’s Unlicensed Sports Betting Operations
A Suffolk County Superior Court judge has issued a preliminary injunction against prediction markets platform Kalshi, effectively barring it from offering sports betting in Massachusetts without a gaming license. The ruling comes after state Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell filed a September lawsuit alleging illegal sports wagering operations.
Judge Christopher Barry-Smith's decision prohibits Kalshi from offering sports-related event contracts until it complies with Massachusetts Sports Wagering Law licensing requirements. The platform has until Friday to respond to the state's proposed injunction terms, which explicitly forbid disrupting existing user contracts.
This case represents growing regulatory scrutiny of prediction markets platforms across multiple U.S. jurisdictions. Campbell emphasized state sovereignty in gaming regulation with a social media post stating: 'If you want to operate a sports betting business here in Massachusetts, you have to play by our rules. Period.'
